Do You Want More Comments on Your Home Business Blog?

by Mary Emma Allen on June 10th, 2007

Bloggers usually enjoy hearing from other bloggers in the form of comments.  Some write their blogs simply as an outlet and a way to share what they’re doing.

Others, who relate blogging to their home businesses, find that comments are helpful in getting an idea of what their customers like and even don’t like.  So they wonder how to increase comments and input on their blog.

Yvonne Russell, of Grow Your Writing Business, has written a great post about comments, Do You Make Readers Run a Comment Obstacle Course?  Even though Yvonne’s blog concerns the writing business, the information she supplies regarding blog comments can apply to any business.  She has spent a great deal of time researching how she can increase the comments to her blog and is willing to share this with others…in a very readable format.

So, if you’re wondering how to increase the comments on your blog, you may find some great tips at Yvonne’s blog.

Thanks for the mention Mary Emma.

Comments are a good way to give feedback and gain new perspectives. However, I’ve found it needs to be a two way streeet to be effective.

Responding to comments and visiting commenters’ blogs are two ways to keep the conversation going. Similar to feedback in a face to face situation, if someone takes the time to give feedback or ask a question, it is not only good business practice, but common courtesy to acknowledge it and build a conversation.

This is key if the blog is intended as a business tool. A business blog for a small home business is often the customer’s first point of contact.

My blog used to be comment unfriendly until I installed the Akismet spam filter and lifted the registration requirement (what was I thinking?) Since then, my traffic has more than doubled and I have spent additional time to write more thoughtful posts.

Thanks, Matt, for sharing your experience with comments. I’ve found Akismet very helpful in filtering out the unwanted comments, too.
