BT Gremlins get the all clear

by David Allen

When the latest advert for BT’s 24/7 Business Service first appeared, there were complaints from concerned parents saying that the advert, which features the Gremlins and Dragons Den star Peter Jones, was too frightening for younger children.

The advert was already classed as “Ex-Kids” by Clearcast, the agency responsible for checking adverts for suitability; this means that it should not be shown around programmes that are intended for younger children.

The complaints stated that this was not good enough and young children were seeing the advert and as a result had been suffering from nightmares.

But the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) ruled that the classification was good enough because the advert itself was more of a comedy sketch, rather than a piece of horror.
