Irish government invests EUR 435 mln in broadband Thursday 3 July 2008 | 04:01 PM CET

Ireland's Department for Communications has published a consultation paper on its plans for next-generation broadband. Communications Minister Eamon Ryan said a world-class broadband infrastructure would help attract leading, knowledge-based industries to Ireland to secure its future economic prosperity and competitiveness. This would benefit society and consumers looking for improved coverage, higher speeds and lower costs. Ireland currently has over one million broadband subscribers. The government is pledging to have universal access to broadband in Ireland by early 2010, and to have broadband speeds equal to or exceeding those in comparator EU regions by 2012. An investment of EUR 435 million has been earmarked under the National Development Plan 2007-2013 to help achieve these targets. Ryan outlined a number of policy action planned by the government. These include the National Broadband Scheme to ensure that 'all requests' for broadband will be met in areas currently without broadband access. Roll-out of the scheme will commence shortly and be completed by New Year 2010. The government also pledges to deliver 100 Mbps high-speed broadband to all secondary schools across Ireland.
