Vancouver police say a man, 21, was shot in the leg and was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries. (CBC) Police arrested a man and are looking for another after a young man was shot in the leg near a busy intersection in downtown Vancouver Friday.
Some witnesses said the shooting stemmed from two men fighting on the street.
Vancouver Police Department spokesperson Const. Tim Fanning said the shooting took place around 5:15 p.m. in an alley near Davie and Thurlow streets.
'They were fist-fighting … Some other guy shot him and ran down the alley.' — One witness who asked not to be identified
A 21-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries, Fanning said.
"There were three men. They were arguing in the lane. One man pulled out a gun and shot one of the other men. He was shot through the leg," Fanning said.
The three men are known to police but it's not known if they knew each other, Fanning said.
"[Two men] ran away immediately. One of the suspects was grabbed really quickly because there was a couple of officers that were half a block away."
Loaded handgun found on suspect
Police found a loaded handgun on the man who was arrested, Fanning said.
"There is one suspect that is still outstanding. We believe we know who he is. We will be looking for him," Fanning said.
Several witnesses told CBC News they heard at least two shots. One witness said he saw a man running away from the alley.
Some witnesses also told police one man was jaywalking on Davie Street in front of a black SUV, and that the driver pulled over and got into a fight with the pedestrian.
One witness, who asked not to be identified, said a third person fired the shots.
"They were fist-fighting … Some other guy shot him and ran down the alley," the witness said. "A police car came a minute later and sort of chased the guy down the alley and they lost him."
Fanning has not confirmed if a fight triggered the shooting.
Davie Street was closed between Bute and Burrard streets but has since been reopened.
