Intel Says To Prepare For More Cores

There was a time when Intel's processors were known for their numbers. While some of that remains, the word "core" has been added to it, indicating the strength of the processing that's happening in your computer. AMD even joined the action by releasing the odd-numbered equivalent. With that said, what does the future bring? If Intel's going to have its way, we'll be looking at more cores than ever before.

Intel is telling software developers to start thinking about not just tens but thousands of processing cores.

Intel currently offers quad-core processors and is expected to bring out a Nehalem processor in the fourth quarter that uses as many as eight cores.

Of course, I'm already wondering what sort of applications will need eight cores. Games come to mind, considering how demanding they can be. Right now, an eight-core app is unimaginable, but who knows what will happen in the coming years?
