Searchers abandon hope of finding quake survivorsAug 20 2007 1:03PM
Associated Press They're now concentrating on clearing tons of rubble from the streets of the southern port city of Pisco (PEE'-skoh). The city was leveled by the magnitude-eight quake, which killed at least 540 people. More than 85 percent of the homes in Pisco were destroyed. Searchers removed nearly 150 bodies from a church in the city. The church's domed ceiling broke apart during the quake, which lasted two minutes. No survivors have been found in the debris from the quake since Friday. Peru's government is making plans to rebuild the city. The Vatican, meanwhile, is joining other international donors, saying it has sent $200,000 in aid for quake victims. % |
